There’s a line in the old Otis Redding song that keeps haunting me: “Sittin’ on the dock of the bay, watching the tide roll away.” “Just, Wasting time.” When did those two words become so foreign to us? When did doing nothing become something we forgot how to do?

After Christmas, I made a decision that felt both terrifying and essential. I disappeared. I took off, and spent one week at a monastery, in a little town, not far from my home —just me, a narrow bed, a wooden chair, and silence so thick you could almost taste it. No cell phone buzzing with notifications. No emails demanding immediate responses. No scroll, no refresh, no endless digital tether pulling me away from myself.

The first day, my hands kept reaching for a phone that wasn’t there. Phantom vibrations. Muscle memory searching for dopamine hits. But by day three, something shifted. The quiet stopped feeling empty and started feeling full. My thoughts, usually fragmented across a dozen apps and obligations, began to settle like sediment in still water. I could see clearly again.

I’m not alone in this hunger for analog living. Everywhere I look, people are reaching backward to move forward. Teenagers are buying disposable cameras at thrift stores. Twenty-somethings are installing landlines in their apartments. Walkman’s are selling out. Gen Z women are booking stays at convents—actual convents—for what TikTok has dubbed “vow of silence summer.” Yeh, this seems to be a trend right now - I had no idea when my spirit compelled me to do this late last year - so I was very surprised to see its becoming a thing.

This isn’t just millennial nostalgia or Gen X wistfulness for simpler times. It’s something more urgent: a collective exhale after years of holding our breath in the digital deep end.

What strikes me most is that this movement isn’t rooted in panic or burnout the way it used to be. People aren’t fleeing their screens because they’re broken—they’re stepping away because they’ve remembered there’s a whole world that doesn’t require WiFi. Hiking without documenting it. Reading books that don’t become content. Having conversations that disappear into the air instead of living forever in a cloud.

There’s a quiet rebellion happening. Being offline is becoming its own kind of luxury. Proof that your life doesn’t need an audience to have meaning. That you’re interesting enough, fulfilled enough, rich enough in experience that you don’t need constant validation from strangers.

And here’s what’s beautiful: when people do come back online, they’re pickier. They want substance, not filler. They’re choosing newsletters over newsfeeds, intentional communities over infinite scroll. They’re treating digital spaces like they treat their time—as something precious, not unlimited.

My week in that monastery taught me that boredom isn’t the enemy we’ve made it out to be. It’s the soil where creativity grows. It’s where ideas bloom without being immediately harvested for content. The best thoughts I’ve ever had came in moments of stillness I would have interrupted with a screen.

Maybe we don’t all need to check into a convent or monastery. But what if we tried one day a week? One weekend a month? What if we let ourselves sit on a metaphorical dock somewhere, watching time pass without trying to capture it, optimize it, or share it?

My son and daughter-in-law decided years ago that their children would not have smartphones. Not as a birthday gift. Not as a Christmas surprise. Not even as a hand-me-down when mom or dad upgraded.

From the very beginning, they were clear — smartphones were not for their kids, and we as grandparents were asked not to gift them one either.

Today, my grandchildren are 10 and 12. They don’t carry smartphones, and yes, they beg for them. They cry about it. They say the familiar words: “But all my friends have one!” Still, their parents stand firm. The rule is simple: You only get a smartphone when you can buy it yourself and pay for the monthly bill.

It’s not a punishment; it’s a principle. And as I watch this unfold, I have to say—it’s brilliant.

In a culture where handing a child a device has become the easiest way to occupy them, my son and daughter-in-law are swimming against the current. Their decision is not always easy. Their kids face peer pressure daily. The begging and tears are real. But so is the lesson. By setting this boundary, they are teaching their children patience, financial responsibility, and the difference between wants and needs.

But perhaps the biggest lesson isn’t financial or even about discipline. It’s about awareness.

I’ve noticed something remarkable about my grandchildren. When we walk together, they look around. They notice the color of the sky, the sound of the birds, and the way the wind feels on their faces. They aren’t bent over a glowing screen. When we sit at a restaurant, they talk to me. They’re present. They’re curious. They’re engaged. They love to spend hours reading a book. They absolutely love handwriting me letters and walking to the mailbox to post the letter. 😊

This stands in stark contrast to so many kids today, who are absorbed in TikTok or texting, barely aware of their surroundings. My grandchildren know what’s happening around them—on the street, at the bus stop, in the park—because they’ve been given the gift of not being constantly distracted.

This reminds me of a talk I watched recently on YouTube about the danger’s technology poses to children’s development. The speaker shared how constant digital stimulation affects attention spans, emotional regulation, and even social skills. The talk has since become one of the most widely viewed presentations, close to 2 million views—and for good reason. Worth listening to…

We see the weight of a handwritten letter because we’ve held it, and we know the reach of a message sent in seconds because we’ve pressed “send” and watched a reply arrive from thousands of miles away.

We are proof that you can change without losing yourself. That you can honor where you came from while learning where the world is going.

We’ve buried friends and welcomed grandchildren. We’ve watched diseases disappear and new ones arrive. We’ve known paper maps and GPS, postcards and emojis, patience and immediacy.

And maybe that’s our real gift — we carry the memory of a slower, quieter world, and the skills to navigate the fast, loud one. We can teach the young that not everything needs to happen instantly… and remind the old that it’s never too late to try something new.

I came home the other day, keys in hand, sun soft on my shoulders, and stopped at the porch.

I heard the sounds of laughter and music blaring from the basement

That meant my granddaughter was visiting, and so were her friends.

Some of these kids, I’ve watched grow up, almost like my own.

I’ve fed them sandwiches at midnight, handed out towels, offered advice they didn’t ask for, and loved them anyway.

They call me “Nana” or “Nanina” or sometimes just “Hey!” from the fridge door.

And now… these voices belong to graduates. Some of them 6 feet tall – yikes. lol

Eighteen. WOW. Eighteen.

They are all eighteen.

That strange, magical, heartbreaking age — when childhood finally let’s go and life starts to pull.

It’s the summer of “lasts.”

Last summer before they scatter.

Last summer of sleepovers on couches and wet footprints on the floor.

Last summer, I’ll likely see all of them together at the same time.

And I can feel it in my bones — the shift.

A soft ache, right behind the ribs.

They say you get 18 summers.

That’s what all the books, posts, and wise voices say.

Eighteen.

That number has been ringing in my heart all week.

I’m standing in it. Summer number 18.

And it’s different. It’s not louder, or wilder — it’s quieter in its joy. Deeper.

Every laugh from the backyard feels more golden now.

Every empty snack bag on the counter, more precious.

Every pair of shoes kicked into a pile — a little goodbye I wasn’t ready for.

This porch has been their runway.

And soon, it’ll be their Launchpad.

Universities, jobs, travels, first apartments, first heartbreaks… life is coming fast.

And this grandmother?

Well, she’s holding back tears in the doorway,

I tell myself to soak it up.

The mess, the noise, the late-night giggles.

The refrigerator that empties by noon, the wet towels that never get hung up.

It all means they’re here.

But I know.

I know the porch will grow quiet.

The shoes will fade — replaced by silence and time.

And maybe the visits will be fewer.

Maybe the couch will stay untouched for weeks.

Maybe summer will feel more like memory than moment.

Still, I will not rush this goodbye.

I will not let tomorrow’s ache steal today’s joy.

So I’ll buy the snacks.

I’ll keep the pool open.

I’ll let them fall asleep mid-movie and wake up at noon.

I’ll say yes more often and hug a little longer.

I’ll sit on the porch and listen to their music and pretend I like it.

Because this is the summer I will remember when they’re gone.

This is the porch I’ll look at when I miss them.

This is the moment I’ll tuck in my heart like a keepsake.

Let them remind me — this house was full. And so was my heart.

And when the last summer child leaves the porch for good…

…I will still be here.

Waiting, hoping, loving, and praying.

Because a grandmother’s porch is never truly empty.

Children are drawn to it. They want to stay longer and be held tighter.

You want to say, I mean no harm. This is just love overflowing.

But even love needs to be careful. Joy must respect parental space. You're no longer the main one; you're the gentle shadow, the quiet heartbeat, the eternal witness.

The Hidden Heartbreak

Divorce can make your role as a grandmother very vulnerable. If your son is no longer involved, you might feel left out, too. Unlike mothers, grandmothers often get forgotten in the chaos of custody battles.

You may miss out on important moments with your grandchildren. Birthdays and photos become distant memories. The pain of being forgotten is deep, but there's no closure.

There's only silence, waiting, and hope for the future.

Hope that one day, when they are old enough to seek you out, they’ll remember the stories you told, the songs you sang, the love that was never meant to be temporary.

The Sacredness in the Struggle

Despite the heartbreak and silence, grandmotherhood is sacred.

It's not just a role; it's a soul transformation.

Yesterday, I sat at a corner table in a charming café near my home, sipping a deliciously hot café latte and watching the world go by.

The world outside the window wore winter’s finest, a soft white, snowy veil that made everything look so pure, clean, and peaceful. Yet, beneath the beauty, my heart felt the weight of the season, heavy and full.

A sort of sadness hung over me as I reflected on life, on the many friends who had passed on so young, on my family, my grandchildren, and more so, on my aloneness. Why, when people reach a certain age, they are doing life alone – it’s a phenomenon that seems to be happening everywhere.

I spent my Christmas in the company of silence. The New Year had tiptoed in without celebration; even my birthday had passed, a solitary candle glowing for no one but me.

My family, so loved and needed, were busy living their own stories, as they should be. Still, the ache pressed against my chest, and I fought to hold back tears. My heart felt tender, bruised by the absence of shared moments.

But then, as if the universe had heard my silent plea, something magical happened. Across the street, in the middle of the snow-draped road, a little cat danced.

She was a vision—soft, silvery grey fur against the white world, just leaping and twirling around as if the snowflakes were her partners. She jumped high, paws outstretched, trying to catch each flake as it drifted down. Around and around she spun, joy radiating from every bounce, completely lost in her world. She didn’t care who watched and didn’t worry if anyone joined her. She simply danced, and in her dance, I saw freedom.

In that moment, as I watched her, something inside me shifted. I realized I needed to find joy in my own company, to learn to dance in my aloneness.

For so much of my life, I had poured myself into others—giving, nurturing, fixing, and doing. I had been so busy filling others' cups that I hadn’t noticed mine had run dry.

But now, I realized something: Life was offering me this time, this space—to sit still, to breathe deeply, to just be. It was a season not of loss but of renewal, a chance to rediscover the beauty of my own company.

Thank you, sweet dancing cat. You were more than just a fleeting moment of joy—you were a reminder that happiness isn’t always found in the company of others. Sometimes, it lives in the quiet, in the snowflakes, in the gentle dance of a soul unafraid to find joy, even when no one else is watching.

It also reminded me to just be, to revel in the moments, to embrace this time in my life.

When the lockdowns happened a few years ago, and children were learning from home, I had the chance a few times a week to watch my grandson while he did his classwork.

I saw how hungry he was to learn new things, so I took the opportunity to teach him new words.

I started a challenge where he would learn a new word each week with me and use that new word throughout the week.

I will never forget the day he used the first word I taught him.

Now, listening to him talk at eleven years old, it’s incredible how advanced he is in his communication.

I turned 65 today, and I feel terrific.  I thank God for my family, for good health, and for giving me so many blessings in my 6.5 decades so far.  I am blessed with amazing sons, a smart, fabulous granddaughter, and three handsome grandsons.

As I sit here looking out over the lake near my home, I reflect on the lessons I have learned.  I decided to document them and share them here with you.

1.       Every day is a new day.  I wake up every morning, plant my feet on the ground, and thank God for life, for health, for happiness, for giving me another day.  Make the most of every single day.  Appreciate the rise of the sun, and the setting of the sun – and be thankful for everything you have – every day give thanks

2.    I am stronger than I give myself credit for – I have learned to trust my intuition, and my sixth sense never fails me.

3.    Always be in a state of learning.

4.    It is better to give than to receive.

5.    Kindness to others is a gift.  It costs you nothing, plus it brings you immense happiness

6.    Always be willing to learn from others.  Both young and old have lots to teach us.

7.    I’ve learned to love books more and more.  Read everything.

8.    Listen well.  I have learned the art of truly listening to others.

9.    To do what I love.

10.  Control stress and keep it to a minimum.  You will live longer.

11.  I have learned how to be my own doctor.  I research everything.  I look for alternative healing first.  There is a time and place for taking medication.

12.  Finding time to mentor a younger person has been immensely rewarding, plus I have learned so much from the younger generation.

13.  I have learned that family is everything.

14.  I have learned to love, give love, and receive love.

15.  True friends are few and life is so short.  Cherish them now while they are here.

16.  Not to take things for granted.

17.  I have learned there is a time to cry, a time to play, and a time to dance – in everything there is a season and a reason.

18.  I have learned to read the science, seek the truth, and form my own opinions.

19.  I am proud of the fact, that I taught myself how to use many software and online programs without going to school. 

20.  I learned how to cook healthy foods.  My passion now is Mediterranean foods.

21.  Learning another language is so rewarding and opens you up to so many unique cultures and the world.

22.  There is more to life than where you live.  I have learned to travel the world, meet new people, and new cultures, and try new things.

23.  I learned how to be a single mother.  Through the tough times and good times, I put my children first.

24.  I learned how to be a grandmother.  I learned I need to step back and let my sons be the head of their own families.  I learned that I am the grandmother, not the parent.  I learned to respect the space my son created so he can raise his own family his way.  I learned to just be a grandmother.

25.  Age is only a number. 

26.  Learned how to pray and study the Bible like never before.  What a phenomenal book the Bible is, and how powerful is prayer – every day the Almighty God hears the names of my children, grandchildren, and the whole family.

27.  The immense pleasure of growing a garden, my own vegetables.  I really wish they taught this in school, because it’s so rewarding to go out into a garden you’ve planted and pick tomatoes, and herbs.  From seeds to plate has been a joy indeed.

28.  I learned the benefit of walking every day and strength training the body– the benefits are incalculable.

29.  Gossiping is so wrong – even the bible says so.

30.  Be willing to compromise.

31.  Getting away and spending time alone is good.  Rediscover yourself. 

32.  I’ve learned to think before I speak.

33.  I’ve learned to love myself just as I am.  I smile at myself in the mirror every morning, and say good morning beautiful, how are you going to make a difference in the world today?

34.  To treat myself how I want to be treated – I send myself flowers and I send others flowers once in a while just because.

35.  Believe in yourself, in your abilities, in the power of you.  Believe that anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and focus.

36.  Be wise, don’t waste your life, and really learn from those who have gone before you.

37.  Friendship with just a few people is more important than friendship with hundreds

38.  Show compassion, understanding, and kindness to those who wish you harm – remember you get more results with honey.

39.  The power of a simple compliment to others, and how it can make someone’s day.  Learn the power of your words – they are powerful, and they can build someone up.

40.  To never let anyone steal your dreams -give the dream stealers a swift kick in the behind and go live your life to the fullest – don’t stop living life because of someone else.

41.  I’ve learned the art of multiple streams of income

43.  Everyone’s journey in life is different, so don’t compare yourself to others, because you have no idea what is happening in their lives.

44.  Learned to make peace with the hurts in your life – learn to forgive.

45.  Stop and smell the roses – see the beauty in everything around you.

46.  Love the changing phases of your body as you grow older – don’t like something, change it. However, “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

47.  Learn not to let fear control you.  There is a solution to every problem, you just have to find it.

48.  Learn to be interested in other people’s stories – learn to really listen to them – it’s an art and will serve you well

49.  Every year try something new.  Canoeing, climbing a mountain, taking a trip by yourself, and/or learning sign language.

50.  Get moving, moving, and moving.  Sitting still is not an option – learn to dance, run, and go on long walks – whatever you do keep active.

51.  Do things you’ve never done before – always have a widespread curiosity about life. 

52.  I will never retire – retire from what – I will always be doing something, creating something.

53.  Talking to young ones is a balm to the spirit.  They keep you feeling young and inspired.

54.  Don’t ever make someone feel insignificant, never bully people, and always respect everyone no matter who they are, or what they are doing.

55.  Read, everything.  Books, magazines, newspapers, blogs, etc.  So much to learn.

56.  My mind needs as much love and care as my body.

57.  I’ve learned that it’s okay to accept help from others – because sometimes you just cannot do it alone.

58.  Get to know your neighbor – the Bible says to love your neighbor, I am surprised how many people never talk to their neighbors.

59.  Have friends of all backgrounds. Ages and gender – you can learn so much from others.

60.  Never stop asking questions – think of everyone you meet as a teacher.  Everyone knows something you don’t know.

61.  No matter your age, now is the time to do that thing you always wanted to do.

62.  Writing a journal is a balm to the spirit – even if you only write in it once a week/month – write notes to yourself.

63.  Less internet, less scrolling social media.

64.  Smile at a stranger in passing for no reason – I bless everyone who passes me and wish them love, healing, happiness

65.  Revel in the moments, and enjoy the rhythmic peaks and valleys.

Share Modern Grandmothers

This morning I bumped into a stranger while she was walking next to me on the street. My reaction was, "Oh, I'm sorry, Ma’am".

She said, "Please, excuse me, Madam. I didn't see you."

The stranger and I were very polite. We said goodbye and went our own way.

Later that day I was cooking dinner when my son stood next to me without saying a word.

When I turned around to take something out from the refrigerator I almost pushed him. "Move out of the way", I said in anger.

He walked away as his little heart was broken. I didn't realize I was talking very severely.

In the evening I couldn't sleep. As I was lying awake in bed, a peaceful voice came to me and said:

"Today you used basic courtesy with a complete stranger. But with your beloved family, you were disrespectful.

"If you go and look at the kitchen floor, you'll find some flowers near the door.

"These are some flowers that your son gave you.

"He picked them by himself, especially for you: yellow, purple, and blue. He stood quietly because he didn't want to ruin the surprise. He was waiting until you finished in order to give them to you as a gift.

"You didn't even see the tears that filled his little eyes."

Suddenly I felt very small and tears dripped on my cheeks.

I got up and went to the kitchen. I saw the flowers on the floor in the corner and picked them up.

After that, I entered my son's room quietly and sat by his bed, "Wake up, my little boy, wake up." I asked him, "Are these the flowers you chose for me?"

He wiped his eyes and smiled, "I found them near the tree. I took them because they're beautiful just like you. I knew you’d love them, especially the purple ones."

I cried and said, "My son, I'm very sorry about the way I behaved earlier today; I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that."

He said, "Mom, that's fine. I love you no matter what."

I said, "My son, I love you too and I love the flowers, especially the purple ones."

I hugged him as if I have never hugged him before and he fell asleep in my arms with a smile on his face.

The story isn't about the flowers at all. They are the bonus in the story. They just add some color.

How many times have you seen a mother or a father allowing themselves to yell at their child in a way they will NEVER allow themselves to yell at a stranger?

What about insulting?

Talking impatiently?

Sarcastically?

Blaming without even listening to what their angel has to tell them?

Punishing?

Getting angry?

"You must not hurt your own children; even if they are yours."

Because first of all, they are independent human beings, and most of all, they belong to themselves.

Just as you would not hurt a stranger – you must not hurt them.

The fact that physically they are closer, more available, weaker, they are at a disadvantage compared with you (as the provider of most of their needs) and most of all, forgive you for anything you do against them – doesn't give you permission to hurt them.

On the contrary!

Now, instead of staring at the screen go to each one of your angels and tell them: "I love you too".

In the squalor of her ramshackle home in Querétaro, Mexico, Alejandra knelt beside her makeshift bed with an open bible.  Her grandparents were sleeping, and only the dim light of a kerosene lamp shone upon each page. “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in his law, he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper,” (Psalm 1:1-3 NKJV).

God was speaking, and His words were not lost on young Alejandra.  She understood the significance of what she was reading. If she turned away from worldly temptation and put her delight in the LORD – if she pondered on His precepts and promises day and night, whatever she put her hands to do would ultimately prosper.  Since her parents were killed in an accident, Alejandra’s dream was to make a better life for herself and her grandparents.  Faith in God’s Word allowed Alejandra to believe He could make it happen. She so wanted a better life for herself and her grandparents   

The next morning she watched as her Abuelita’s (her grandmother) brown weathered fingers looped and arranged colorful ribbons in a row. She was making a Mexican ragdoll.  Bright scraps of cloth and thread lay across Abuelita’s lap as she formed a little dress and sash to complete the look she was after.

‘No one can ever appreciate the skill and love that goes into these dolls’ Alejandra thought to herself as she watched her Abuelita sew. This gave Alejandra an idea and excitement began to bubble up inside of her.

When the old woman cut the last thread, she handed the doll to Alejandra. 

“Gracias, Abuelita!”  Alejandra exclaimed, giving her a hug.  “Someday I’ll make dolls as wonderfully as you!  I’ll take our dolls to market and Jesus will help us sell them — I’m sure of it!”  Abuelita smiled.  She loved her granddaughters’ enthusiasm.  She was going places this little one of her heart.

Ever after, Alejandra applied herself to become as wonderful a doll-maker as her Abuelita, and she prayed over each doll she stitched.  Whenever doubt crept in and she began to doubt her dream, she’d turn to God’s promise “Delight yourself also in the LORD and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass,” (Psalm 37:4-5 NKJV).  She would never give up until she fulfilled her God-given dream.

What is your dream? 

Are you willing to put in the work and trust in the Lord to bring it to pass?  The promise of blessing is tied to work.  If you’re not planning on doing anything, don’t expect God to bless you.

Life’s greatest adventures begin with a dream.  Dreams are unique and specific to you just like your fingerprints.  Don’t let anyone or anything rob your dreams and don’t allow your lack of resources to steal them away from you.  A Dream not acted upon is stolen already.  God put that dream, that passion in you, he gave you that gift.

… God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” Romans 12:3

Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know Jeremiah 33:3

Now unto Him, that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.  Eph 3:20

So, dream your dreams, but then do the work, work bears within it the seed of a miracle.  Ask the Father who birthed that idea in you, the Father that gave you that gift to grant you favor with the person you are about to meet, the blog you are about to start, the book you are about to write, the restaurant you are about to open, whatever it is take God with you – you will not fail.

Michelangelo once said. “The danger is not that we could dream too high and fail, the real danger is that we dream too low and succeed.”

It does not matter what the dream is, if God places it in your heart as he did for Alejandra, and if you do not despair, do not give up – he will bless your dream.

Recently I have been using my empty glass coffee jars to store blueberries, tomatoes, and raspberries, and friends I am telling you they last for weeks.  Just make sure they are dry before you put them in the jars.

Share Modern Grandmothers

15 years ago I was driving my son home from work when he turns to me and says – I have to tell you something, he smiles, pauses, turns and pats me on my back, and says – Mom, you are going to be a grandmother!!

Looking back on that moment in time, I can tell you, it was shock and excitement all rolled up into one. A grandmother, really, wow, I wasn’t ready, for that, what did this mean, I was still so young in my opinion. 

But how quickly I moved into the role and embraced my firstborn son and my daughter-in-law in the excitement of their firstborn.

One thing I made them promise was that I wanted my grandchildren to call me by a special name, and the name I chose to be called was ‘Nana’. I just loved the sound of it, and I bragged about it everywhere. And soon everyone was calling me a modern grandmother – and thus the name of this website was born… And 15 years ago this year my first grandchild was born. A girl.

I learned what true love was when my son laid her in my arms.

There is nothing like the feeling of being a grandmother – you know that saying – “when the child you love has a child you love with all that is within you, only then will you know just how grand being a grandparent truly is.”

Last week, I invited my grandmother (GG) over for dinner to celebrate her 93rd birthday. That's right, at 39 years old, I have a 93-year-old grandmother, and she still drives. She also teaches water aerobics, plays mahjong, can kick my butt at Scrabble—every time—and has only been romantically kissed by one man in her entire life.

FAITH - A Prayer for You

This prayer was my best friend’s favorite prayer. Every time I expressed stress in my life, he lovingly recited this prayer to me. For 25 years of our friendship, this was his go-to prayer. Something about the words always resonated with me. My friend is in heaven now, but this prayer which I have memorized is a balm to my spirit.

Slow me down, Lord.

Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind.

Steady my hurried pace with a vision

of the eternal reach of time.

Give me amid the confusion of the day,

the calmness of the everlasting hills.

Break the tension of my nerves and muscles

with the soothing music of the singing streams that live in memory.

My Four Musketeers

I know without a doubt, a grandmother’s phone is loaded with photos of her grandchildren, and if you make the mistake of asking her “do you have any pictures of your grandchildren”, she whips out her phone faster than a cowboy whips out his gun, and for the next hour you are listening to the annotations and beautifully crafted dialogue about the greatness of her grandchildren - oh, and the smile never ever leaves her face for one minute while she’s showing you those adorable pictures.

After all, grandparents are the biggest braggers of their grandchildren, so here’s your chance to brag - every other week we will pick a grandmother and grandchild to brag about. These are my adorable grandchildren. All four speak at least two languages, with my granddaughter now speaking five languages and she just turned 14. Their dreams and goals are lofty and exciting - doctor, engineer, architect, police officer - oh, the places they will go. I tell you I speak nothing but love, blessings, and encouragement into their lives because they are going to really make a difference. They are my raison d’etre!

In early 2020, we all watched as the world changed before our eyes. We scrambled to keep up with the ever-changing regulations and guidelines. And in our frantic striving to keep our heads above water, many of us let self-care fall to the sidelines.

I mean, seriously, eyebrows not plucked, hair in a bun 24/7, working from home and only the top half of me ever got dressed for work - you know just in case the boss needs to do a Zoom Call, and you had to show your face and show some semblance of normalcy. I’m serious self-love was not even on my radar - I was making sure everyone else was okay, filling in for kids who needed me to babysit (don’t get me wrong I loved the time with my grandbabies), but I did these even when I was exhausted.

During the pandemic, I realized that my usual self-care routine no longer worked. Instead of going to a quaint bed and breakfast in an out-of-the-way town and indulging in spa treatments, I was forced to think of new ways to take care of myself. Perhaps you’re in the same spot, wondering how to take care of YOU when the world around you seems upside-down.

1. Keep a gratitude and celebration journal.

It’s really easy to get bogged down by stress, especially if you’re overwhelmed by everything you have to get done. Writing down things you’re thankful for can help you lower stress levels in your body. It may also help you keep things in perspective, even when life is at its most hectic.

In addition to writing down things you’re thankful for, write down things you specifically have done well. When you write down your accomplishments (big or small), you’ll get a boost to your self-esteem. Look back on those pages when you’re in a rut, especially if you’re feeling down on yourself.

2. Take yourself on a fun or fancy date.

Don’t wait for someone else to take you out. If there’s a restaurant you’ve wanted to try or a movie you’d like to see, take yourself on a date! Even if you tend to be extroverted, taking yourself on a date is a great way to invest in what you want to do.

There’s no rule against going to a sit-down restaurant alone. While outings with your significant other or family are great, time spent alone is good for your soul. As a bonus, you won’t need to entertain anyone else or maintain the conversation, since you’ll be all by yourself!

I know eating out in a restaurant right now is difficult in some areas.  But why not set up a romantic corner in your home, with a fancy table setting and order in.  Break out the fine china, and the crystal wine glass, turn on some classical music or music of your choice and just revel in the moment.  This day is yours, it will never pass this way again, so enjoy the time, whether alone or with someone, revel in the moments of today.

3. Have a cup of herbal tea (or wine)!

Sometimes we overthink self-care when in reality, it can be as simple as sitting down to a cup of herbal tea. Or maybe treat yourself to some connoisseur teas, like Hibiscus, Matcha, Jasmine, or Oolong.  You might even sit down in a cozy chair and pour yourself a glass of wine at the end of a busy day.

This is one of those self-care ideas that you can work into your schedule every day. You don’t need to get away for the weekend or even carve out a full afternoon. Take ten to thirty minutes and sit down with your drink. Consider the smell, the flavor, and the sensations. If possible, turn off your phone during this time so you can truly live in the moment with your drink.

4. Cut out toxic relationships.

Some relationships are just toxic. If there’s someone who habitually mistreats you, steps on your feelings, or stresses you out, it may be time to reevaluate that relationship. Be honest with that person about why you need to take a break from their friendship.

Most women aren’t comfortable cutting people out entirely. If you can’t cut off the relationship, set up very strict boundaries around it. For example, don’t be afraid to say, “When you say that, it really hurts my feelings.” Keep in mind that it’s always okay to say “no” to requests to meet up, especially if that relationship isn’t uplifting.

5. Take a day (or more) away from social media.

Social media can be detrimental to your mental health in so many ways. While it’s a powerful tool for staying connected with others (especially during the pandemic), it can also be a cause for significant stress.

Take a day or more to completely disconnect from social media. If you need to use social media for your work, set careful boundaries around how you use it. Limit how much time you spend scrolling through your news feed and free yourself up to invest in other areas of your life.

In today’s world, you need to shut off the world, and all its negativity.  I started doing this every evening, and what a difference it makes in my sleep, in my sense of well-being.

6. Buy a new set of comfy pajamas (or a nice set of bedsheets).

Few things are as luxurious as slipping into comfortable pajamas at the end of the day. Even if you already have pajamas, go out and buy a new set of comfortable bedclothes. Comfortable sleepwear can be an effective tool to help you unwind and recharge at the end of the day.

This is another self-care practice that doesn’t require a lot of time, yet provides significant benefit to your well-being. You’re already going to bed on a daily basis, so why not enjoy it to the fullest?

New bedsheets are another great way to indulge in self-care. Everyone has different preferences when it comes to bedsheets, but a fresh pair of your favorite type of sheets may be just the rejuvenation you need.

7. Embrace the small things in life.

In Denmark, Hygge is the idea that people should appreciate coziness and small things in life. Take time to embrace the small, cozy moments in life. Whether that’s sitting on the couch cuddled up with your grandkids or enjoying a delicious meal.

Mindful practice can help you enjoy thing things that are already right in front of you. Instead of rushing from task to task, take time to live completely in the moment. Don’t worry about everything on your plate, but enjoy each activity and task as it comes. And when you can… take some time to indulge in something warm and cozy!

8. Don’t ignore your physical or mental health needs.

Let’s be honest: we as women can be pretty bad at taking care of our own needs. However, neglecting your needs can result in catastrophic physical or mental health problems. Whether you need to go to the doctor or set up a visit with a therapist, make sure you’re staying on top of your overall health.

This also includes listening to your body’s cues. When you’re hungry, resist the urge to skip meals because you’re too busy. If you’re exhausted, take a nap or go to sleep early. Listening to your body’s cues can prevent burnout and health issues down the road.
